IT Alert: Email delivery problems through campus SMTP system

All e-mail through smtp.ufl.edu between 11:15am and 12:53pm lost.

Update: 3:30pm, July 1: UFIT is working to identify all those who sent email that was affected by this disruption. We will send notifications to these people informing them that their email was not delivered and that they should attempt to send any affected email again.

Original Alert Text: While investigating reports of email delivery problems UFIT staff discovered that an email security rule placed in the ProofPoint email scanning system was inadvertently discarding all email through the campus SMTP system (smtp.ufl.edu). This affected all email inbound and outbound from UF from 11:15am until the problem was identified and corrected at 12:53pm today July 1.

Due to the nature of the way the messages were discarded (accepted and quietly discarded), the affected messages will not be retried by their sending systems.

Email internal to the UF Exchange/Office 365 system (from one Exchange/O365 mailbox to another) was not affected by this incident.

UFIT sincerely apologizes for the interruption in business that this incident has caused. We are taking immediate measures to prevent any recurrence of similar problems.
