Updates to Exchange Email and Outlook Web Access

Exchange migrations for CLAS departments have started. Outlook Web Access for email gets a new look.

What to Expect

Exchange migrations for CLAS departments are happening on Monday or Tuesday evenings. The next morning you’ll be prompted to restart Outlook once for each account you have set up.

Outlook Web Access (OWA) will look different and a few of the issues we’ve run into, particularly on Macs, should be resolved.

Possible Issues

In most cases the migration is seamless and does not require any client reconfiguration but here are some issues we’ve seen so far:

  • Outlook clients will be prompted to restart. In cases where users have shared mailboxes mapped, they can be prompted multiple times.
  • IMAP clients may re-download all message headers.
  • Outlook for Mac and Mac Mail clients may stop syncing and need to be restarted.
  • Mobile devices should be seamless and require no action, though a few accounts have had to be recreated when they stopped receiving new mail.
  • Lync users may receive a notification that their contact list is being updated. Following that message users may see their contacts disappear and reappear.
  • In some cases Lync may lock the Outlook .ost file and block Outlook from restarting. If you experience this we recommend that you close Lync first before restarting Outlook.
  • A small number of mailboxes have had errors during the move process.  These are invisible to the user and the move is postponed to a later time period.
