The Windows 10 end-of-life (EOL) date is almost here. In just a few weeks on October 14th, Microsoft will cease to provide technical support, feature updates, or security updates for the 10-year-old operating system. To protect campus systems and data, any Windows 10 device will be blocked from accessing UF’s network starting in October.
Over the past couple of years, CLAS IT has worked closely with departments to identify and replace machines that cannot move to Windows 11, and most of those have already been addressed. Still, a few upgrade-capable computers may remain. If you think you’re using Windows 10 and feel that you might be using one of these devices, please contact your department’s office manager about what, if anything, can be done. Please note that in some cases there may be no plans to replace the device, and it will be retired/recycled. If you suspect that applies to your system, you should start identifying any locally stored files you would like to keep and move them to your UF provided cloud storage, while the machine still has network access.
All departments should have a plan in place for any remaining Windows 10 devices before the network block begins in October. If you suspect your machine was overlooked or you’re unsure what you’re running, reach out to your office manager now so we can help you avoid interruptions.
