Retiring Windows 7 and Upgrading to Windows 10

On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will officially end extended support for Windows 7. This means that bug fixes and patches will no longer be provided for machines running Windows 7. In order to accommodate this change and prevent security risks, UFIT will begin sending monthly warnings to all users running Windows 7 on their computers starting January 2019. These warnings will become a weekly reminder in November 2019. On Feburary 1, 2020, UFIT will block any computers with the Windows 7 OS from the campus network.

For our faculty/staff here at CLAS, this means that if you are still on Windows 7, you can request a free upgrade for your UF-owned machine at any time and we will be happy to accommodate this request. Submit a ticket using our service request form and we can guide you through backing up your files and setting up an appointment to perform the upgrade. Please note that the upgrade will entail a complete re-installation of the operating system, which is why it is essential for you to back up your files. We will not upgrade faculty/staff computers without previous notice. If your computer is an older model, we may be able to replace the machine, but in most cases this will not be necessary.

For personal computers, students, faculty, and staff may purchase the Windows 10 upgrade by visiting https://portal.helpdesk.ufl.edu/

We are located in Bryant 301 and are open Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-5:00PM. Our main line is 352-846-1990.
