- Any media which has been used for backup or storage of data must be erased or destroyed per the UF IT security standards before it is discarded.
- Acceptable methods for non-reuse of media include degaussing, pulverizing, and multi-pass erasure.
- Methods for re-use of media should be de-gaussing of tapes (if applicable) or multi-pass erasure if the media is going to leave CLAS IT’s custody.
- Any media which is sent to a third party for destruction with data intact must be documented, and the third party must return documentation of final disposition. Documentation of media sent to third parties must be retained at least until the destruction is complete and verification documentation is returned to CLAS IT.
